Community building in your neighborhood is not easy, but it can be rewarding and fun. Neighborhoods where neighbors look out for each other, interact in each other’s lives, and partake in community activities report feeling safer and leading healthier lives.

There are several ways to build strong community in your neighborhood, including outdoor gatherings and activities, as well as communal services like free wireless internet access for the whole neighborhood. Computers and Internet are fast becoming an important element of community building, both by providing free access to the Internet and by providing community-building online groups or social networks. Whether you are a veteran to your neck of the woods, or if you just moved, here are some ways to reach out and get to know your neighbors.

Start a community garden or P-Patch. Community gardening is a low-cost venture with health and social benefits. With the recent trend towards organic foods and sustainable living, neighborhoods across the nation are reaping the harvest of community gardens. If you have extra land, you can get the garden started, and then go around to your neighbors and ask if they would like to contribute. Farmer’s markets are also a popular community activity that benefits farmers and small businesses, promotes local business, and provides a healthy activity that the whole family can enjoy.

Overall, think local. When you go shopping, consider shopping in your neighborhood. Support local businesses as much as possible. Make sure to small talk, and get to know your local employees and business owners.

There are plenty of other ways to get involved and help build strong community, but it might be best to stick with one or two organizations. Whether it’s volunteering at a homeless shelter, church, kids group, or special event, focus on that cause and become its champion. A few strong leaders can go a long way in building strong community.
