Finding Internet Hotspots

Recently, there has been a great deal of information about the risks to people from the use of Internet hotspots. These are locations where you can go in your area where there is an open Internet connection. In most homes, you have a locked connection, meaning that only the devices that have the connection code are able to log into the system and use your Internet. This locked connection protects you from others getting into your Internet connection and potentially gathering your information.

Nevertheless, you likely want to be able to take your laptop from place to place. You want to go to the coffee shop to work or you want to use your Internet connection at the airport. You can use these open Internet connections but doing so can be rather tricky. The problem is, anyone can see what you are doing and may be able to hack into your system.

Whenever you use a free WiFi hotspot, be prepared. Be sure your security devices are up to date and be sure that you run a security check right after using the hotspot. In addition to this, avoid using the hotspot for any type of high security event. For example, you do not want to use it to gather your banking information or to log into your credit card accounts online. Leave those transactions for just the secure connection that you have at home. Doing this will help prevent a wide range of problems you could have otherwise.

Keep in mind that hotspots can be a good way for you to use the Internet when you are on the go, but they do pose a security risk. You do not know who is also using that hotspot and sometimes personal data can be left hanging on the system. Therefore, take steps to prevent any type of problem from occurring by using these hotspots wisely.
